There’s just something missing with this particular cast/season of Project Runway, am I right? Is it Michael Kors? Does the show just NEED him?
I was really excited when I heard the challenge this week. I love the 90s and I love 90s fashion, so I really liked the idea of taking inspiration from 1994 to create clothes for the cover of Marie Claire in 2034. I have been a PR fan since season 1, so I remember what it was like when those talented designers were given a similar challenge (they had to create fashion for the future using clothes from a vintage clothing store). I also remember how exciting and riveting it was to watch those talented people be creative and make interesting fashion. Not only did I find this episode boring, but I felt that (nearly) everything from this group of designers felt very 2014. Case in point, these are the looks that were in the middle:
None of these looks seem to be making any kind of statement as to what the cover of Marie Claire will look like in 20 years. A couple of them actually look a little dated (Amanda and Samantha), some are downright hideous (Hernan), and at least one looks just like a wet suit (Mitchell), but they all look decidedly now, and none looks like it meets the goals of the challenge.
As for the winning look:
I’m not even going to bother saying that the judges have lost their minds. A picture is worth a thousand words.
I guess Kristine should have won. I’m not terribly enthusiastic, but it’s probably the best look and the jacket is cool.
Initially, I was team Emily. When the model stepped onto the runway and snapped off her Ewok hoodie, my jaw dropped. Everyone gasped. I thought it was the sure-fire winner. But after the runway show ended and the dust settled, I realized that I side with Nina Garcia on this one. The model just worked the shit out of this outfit, that’s actually pretty basic.
The bottom three:
A potato sack (but Hernan’s look was worse. So was Amanda’s).
A flight attendant from the 60s.
Perhaps Tim Gunn was right to say that this wasn’t the right platform for Angela. Not everyone is cut out for reality TV. This was not the worst look on the runway AT ALL (Hernan… Amanda…). I don’t even think it was bottom 3, but the judges had it out for Angela from the beginning. This outcome was inevitable.
