You know what I think of when I think of an unconventional wedding dress?
I do not think of this:
It feels, even to me, that I’m being very critical of this season of Project Runway. From the way the judges over-praise everything to the designs themselves, I have genuinely felt that this season has just been lacking.
This episode is the perfect illustration of everything that I feel is wrong with PR this season. I have no problem with the fact that Kini and Sean won the Unconventional wedding dress/reception dress challenge. They really were the best team:
But isn’t that in and of itself kind of a sad statement? Don’t you feel like most of the contestants on seasons 1-4 would have sewn circles around these two?
It isn’t even that Sean made pants. I get that an unconventional bride might not want to wear a wedding dress. It’s just that this particular wedding outfit is something I might consider wearing to work. Where was the drama, the spectacle, the fantasy, and the high fashion?! This was a wedding challenge and there was no real show-stopper. It’s just kinda… sad.
And for the record, of the two, Kini really should have won because he took some traditional wedding dress conventions and made them unconventional.
As far as team Amanda and Korina:
I agree that their looks were middle-of-the-road.
And speaking of everything that is wrong with PR this season, is it just me or did their drama seem a little contrived? Korina says something to Amanda (off camera) about how she is fake. This really hurts Amanda’s feelings (allegedly). Then, when Tim “randomly” puts people into their teams-of-two, these two just happen to be the only two names left in the button-bag. I call shenanigans. I have no way to prove it, but I’m willing to bet that there were no buttons with Amanda or Korina’s names on them, thus ensuring they would need to be the final team. Whatever. The whole thing feels really MTV, and it turned out that they created a couple of really inoffensive outfits.
Now for all the losing looks:
I can’t come up with anything better than Big Bird and Tweety Bird. Credit where it’s due: Zac Posen nailed it. However, I agree with Tim. I don’t think the color would have been as much of a problem if the design and the construction would have been better. Doing a quick Google search reveals that there are a surprising number of unconventional wedding dresses in that shade of yellow. I don’t happen to like any of them, but that’s just a matter of taste. They exist and they’re interesting. These two looks are disastrous. Char deserved to go home.
P.S. Why did Char have so much trouble with leather? Had she never worked with it before? And if not, why choose a high-stress, time-limited situation to experiment with a new fabric? I never understand why designers do that. She just struggled with her design and her fabrics for some reason.
Tim’s odd statement about how he would have given her the “Tim Gunn Save” if they were later in the season was kinda bullshit.
The red lace is beautiful. Everything else is just wrong. Samantha needs to Step. It. Up. I feel like she has potential, but she hasn’t come close to showing it.
Poor Fade. His reception dress is (yet again) sexy and cool and a good design. Unfortunately, Emily’s goth wedding dress is just laughable. I know they’re trying to make Kini out to be the Susan Lucci of Season 13, but Fade has deserved some recognition for the last 3 or 4 challenges and he has been completely ignored.
