This week, the designers were asked to create an extravagant evening-wear look inspired by a statement-making piece of jewelry designed by Chopard. For additional inspiration, Tim took the designers to the Charles James exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Because the inspiration was millions of dollars in jewels and breathtaking ballgowns, I wonder why Sandya and Fade decided to make fairly standard cocktail dresses:
I am especially disappointed in Fade. Frankly, Sandya’s dress is pretty, which is always a step in the right direction for her. I am disappointed in Fade, though. His dress is way too casual. They both should have known better, but he really could have done better. I said these very words about Samantha last week, but Fade is playing it way too safe. He needs to Step. It. Up.
Emily, who was also “safe” this week, made a gown. But it’s a sad little gown, isn’t it?
I am, however, very pleased that a couple of the designers were properly inspired by the Chopard jewels and the Charles James gowns, and they managed to create some glamorous evening-wear.
Sean’s dress was gorgeous. Even the Chopard representative on the judge’s panel commented that it looks like it could be on the cover of the Chopard catalog. It’s just so elegant! He deserved to be in the top 3.
However, the win this week clearly and unequivocally belongs to Korina:
So beautiful and dramatic! That coat is fabulous. While Sean’s dress is beautiful, it is also kind of expected. This look is the first gasp-worthy, show-stopping, unexpected look that has gone down the runway all season. Coats like this one are the reason I watch Project Runway. Brava, Ms. Korina!
Oh, but the shoes are terrible. She should not be wearing sandals with that dress and those jewels. No toes on the runway!
Now, the other outfit in the top 3, on the other hand…
… is an affront to all that is fashionable in this world. It’s hideous.
The bottom 3:
Lifetime has been doing a pretty decent job of avoiding the “loser edit” this season. You know how sometimes the episode is edited in such a way that you can guess who will be in the bottom 3, even when everyone is still in the workroom? Well, throughout this episode, I actually thought KIni was going to be a contender for the win. They were careful not to show the entire gown too closely, there were little “quiz boxes” that popped up asking if Kini was “due” for a win, and even his own confidence in the dress made it feel like he would at least be in the top 3 again.
Until, that is, his dress went down the runway.
Yikes. The boobs on that dress are insane! Everything the judges said about it was spot-on. The fabric was wrong, the length was wrong. Not a good week for Mr. Kini.
It looks like a bunch of garbage bags sewn together. And it covers the necklace. And the necklace is kinda the point of the whole thing. Alexander is lucky that Samantha bored Nina…
And we all know there is no greater PR sin than boring Nina. Just last week, I wrote that Samantha had to “Step. It. Up.” I guess she doesn’t read my blog.
