Not to start things off as a Debbie Downer, but I was very disappointed in the cast for this season’s PR All Stars. With the exception of Chris March from season 4 and Jay Sario from season 7, all the designers are from seasons 10, 11, and 12. Boo.
Lest there be any doubt, I will be rooting for Chris March.
For the first challenge of the season, the designers were split up into two teams. The boy’s team had to design a collection inspired by New York City’s downtown, while the girl’s team had to create a collection inspired by New York City’s uptown. The boys won the challenge.
Let’s take a closer look at the losing and winning looks from each collection.
The top 3:
I didn’t respond to this as positively as the judges did. It reminds me of that Batman villain with two faces. I get that the downtown girl is edgy, but this doesn’t read as “edgy” to me so much as “schizophrenic.”
I love Chris March, and I think that skirt is fierce, but this looks like something from Rayanne’s wardrobe on My So-Called Life. It’s a little too 90s. Like I said, though, the skirt is cool.
Benjamin should take note. This does not look at all disjointed or schizophrenic. It’s lovely. The clear winner! I can see that Benjamin’s outfit and Fabio’s do look like they’re part of the same collection, but Fabio’s is just so much more polished. I love the back.
The Bottom 3:
Michelle is lucky that Ivanka Trump liked this outfit. When it was walking down the runway, I thought the little slit in the front of her dress looked like an opened mouth that was chewing. That’s probably not the effect that Michelle was going for. That fabric is way too heavy for that slit to work. This was a poor showing from a a former PR winner.
I wanted slap some sense into Michelle when she chose suede as her fabric, even though she had never worked with suede before. I will seriously never understand why designers choose these moments as their opportunities to try fabrics they’ve never worked with. You’re on television. Go with what you know.
Kate designed a bridal gown for the Little Mermaid.
Patricia was rightfully sent home for putting her model in a potato sack.
I like Michelle, Dmitri, and Chris March, and Fabio may prove to be a front-runner, as well, so I am hopeful that this season will have some wow moments, but I wish the talent pool was a little more evenly distributed between the earlier and later seasons of the show.
