SNATCH GAME! SNATCH GAME! SNATCH GAME!
The Snatch Game episode of RPDR is the one I look forward to every season. It’s like Drag Christmas! And a Madonna-themed runway show?! What?!?! I expected this to be the best episode ever.
And I was a little disappointed.
First, why no mini-challenges? This is the second week in a row where they go straight to the maxi-challenge, and I think the show suffers for it. The mini-challenges are always so funny and light-hearted that they set a nice tone for the episode.
Then the challenge itself seemed to be missing something. Maybe it’s because the two models who were chosen as the Snatch Game contestants had very little by way of life or personality? I’m not sure, at any rate, here is the cast of this season’s Snatch Game:
Thorgy went as Michael Jackson – and she nailed it! Easily one of my favorite performances of the night. Thorgy had MJ’s mannerisms and idiosyncrasies down. Bob was head and shoulder above the other performers this week, but if not for Bob, Thorgy would have been the clear winner. When Ru asked who her biggest competition was, Thorgy was right to say Bob’s name.
Kim Chi went as Kimmy Jong Un, the drag persona of Kim Jong Un. She took a risk in doing this (nobody has approached Snatch Game by impersonating a woman impersonating a man), and largely I think that risk paid off, especially since her performance was responsible for some of the best one-liners of the episode. Kim: “Weapons of Ass Destruction.” Ru: “I know my emails are gonna get hacked after this show airs.”
Acid Betty went as Nancy Grace. Nancy Grace seemed like a great choice when she first suggested it. It seems to me that Grace is just screaming for a drag persona. But Betty really did drop the ball in her overall look and impersonation. Carson said the wig was more Chaka Khan than Nancy Grace.
Carson also pointed out how Betty’s voice should have sounded and how her mannerisms should have been altered. Betty’s statement that the Snatch Game is dumb is a cop-out. After 8 seasons, she should have been more prepared for this challenge. She had to have known it was coming. I expected much more from Betty and was very disappointed.
Robbie Turner went as Diana Vreeland, legendary editor of Vogue. Robbie also dropped the ball in her performance, not getting the hair or the voice right.
Naomi Smalls went as New York, of Flavor of Love and I Love New York fame. You know, as I’m writing up this run-down, I think I can see why this episode was missing something. Every season, there’s one or two queens who give lack-luster performances, but it seems to me that this season there were only one or two queens who gave really good performances (Bob and Thorgy. Kim Chi and Derrick are tied for third place, in my book). Naomi’s New York didn’t make any sense. She didn’t look, sound, or act like New York. I’m not sure if her Whoopi Goldberg would have been a better choice, but since Bob didn’t end up going as Whoopi, I’m not sure why Naomi decided to go with her plan-B instead of just going as Whoopi.
Chi Chi went as Eartha Kit: I didn’t like it. If she was going to play off the idea that Eartha Kitt actually believed that she was a cat, then shouldn’t she have gone as Eartha Kitt dressed as Cat Woman? This performance just didn’t make any sense.
Derrick Berry went as Britney Spears. Thank the Lord. Obviously, her Britney was cute, funny, and on-point. However, given that this impersonation is what she does for a living, I expected more.
Bob was the winner of this week’s challenge, and deservedly so. Bob’s Uzo Aduba (dressed as Crazy Eyes from Orange is the New Black) was PERFECT! She was hilarious! I know that Ru applauded her switching to Carol Channing half-way through the performance, but I wish she would have just stuck to her impression of Aduba. For one thing, it’s hard not compare Bob’s Carol Channing with Pandora Box’s Snatch Game-winning Carol Channing from a few years ago, and Pandora’s was better. I get that doing two impressions was a risk that paid off for Bob (because she won the challenge), but I wanted to see more Crazy Eyes. I just enjoyed that performance so much more.
As for the Madonna runway:
What was with all the kimonos? Why did nearly every girl choose “Nothing Really Matters” Madonna as her inspiration? Strange. Literally, half of the girls wore kimonos on the runway (Thorgy, Kim Chi, Derrick, and Naomi).
Chi Chi chose Madonna from the Blonde Ambition tour, which is one of the more iconic Madonna looks. It’s hard not to think of the cone bra when thinking about how to approach a Madonna costume.
Bob brilliantly chose Madonna from her appearance as a boy scout at the GLAAD Media Awards.
Robbie chose Madonna from A League of Their Own and she looked adorable!
Still, I would have placed her in the bottom two over Acid Betty, just based on her Snatch Game performance. If Robbie’s runway look was enough to save her from lip lyncing for her life, then it should have been enough to save Betty. I mean, did anyone expect that any of the queens would choose Madonna from Bedtime Stories?
Still, when Ru revealed that Acid Betty and Naomi would be lip-syncing for their lives, Betty half-assed her performance. It should never have been her in the bottom two, but once she was there, she should have turned out her performance. I would have been sad to see either Naomi or Betty go home. I thought they’d be among the final few queens, but based on the lip-sync alone, Ru made the right decision.
So now that Betty’s gone, this show is pretty much Bob’s to win, huh?
