Well, it’s been almost a week since Drag Race aired, so I’m going to do my best to remember the details from the show for this post. My new work schedule is going to make timely blogging a challenge, but I’m going to do my best to blog Drag Race every Wednesday and Project Runway every Saturday. Stay tuned!
At any rate, this week’s episode was called “Book Ball.” The contestants were asked to present three looks for the main stage that present an autobiography:
- Baby Drag Realness
- That’s My Mama Realness
- Autobiographical Eleganza Extravaganza
Basically, they need to show their baby selves when they were just discovering drag, they need to dress like their mothers, and then they need to make a dress entirely out of books.
But first, Puppets! Because everybody loves puppets:
I almost forgot to mention, David and Amy Sedaris were the guest judges this week, and everyone, including Ru, had books to plug.
Oh, and there was also a challenge before the fashion show that had something to with Strangers with Candy. I vaguely remember it.
Congratulations Kim Chi!
She really rocked it this week. David Sedaris looked visibly moved when she came out in her “That’s My Mama Realness” look. It’s spectacular. And Kim is the only girl who was able to weave an autobiographical thread through all her looks. This was a well deserved win.
Chi Chi’s looks were all fierce. I can picture Chi Chi’s mother and her utter fabulousness. And the book dress is incredibly chic. If not for the fact that Kim Chi was a force to be reckoned with this week, Chi Chi would have been a shoe-in for the win. Nice work.
Naomi’s baby look was weak and an excuse to show off her legs. With those legs, though, who can blame her? The “Mama” dress was fine, but the story of her mother embracing all her adopted children was really sweet, and even brought Ms. Naomi to tears on the runway. That book dress, though?! Dear God, it’s a work of art! I take back what I just said about Chi Chi. Maybe Naomi’s look is second best. I just think Naomi might be the one to beat this season.
Kim Chi is a really unique and amazing queen, but as I said before, when it comes time to lip sync for her life, she won’t be able to stand up to any of the remaining queens. I may be wrong about Kim Chi, and part of me hopes I am because she is such an original, but I think Naomi is the complete package and Kim will have a hard time competing head-to-head with her. She’s funny, she stunning, and she can work a runway.
That leaves Bob and Derrick in the bottom 2. And we all knew how that would end, right?
Bob’s mother looks just like Viola Davis.
All the looks here are really solid, but Bob had two issues this week: 1. the other girls were better, and 2. The Eleganza Extravaganza look wasn’t made out of books. It was made out of cardboard. That wasn’t the challenge. Still, Michelle said she wanted Bob to bring out the pretty this week, and I think he succeeded in that regard.
Derrick was bitchier than usual this week, huh? Still, as I said about Bob’s runway looks, when compared to Naomi, Chi Chi, and especially Kim, Derrick’s looks don’t hold up. His “That’s My Mama Realness” look is particularly sad. And his Eleganza look is another bathing suit. She just can’t shake that Vegas showgirl thing.
The lip sync this week was “The Bob show.” Bob ran away with it. He was very gracious with Derrick in the end, though. These queens aren’t just talented this season, they’re classy and professional. It’s a great group.
