Well wasn’t that a drama-filled reunion?!
First Ru asked Alexis Michelle about her reaction to Farrah Moan’s read during the “Reading is Fundamental” Challenge. Alexis was full of excuses, saying that the other queens knew that her weight was a sensitive issue for her. Then Trinity chimed in, saying that drag queens need a thick skin. Like, it’s a job requirement. Shea then came at her hard, pointing out that Alexis made fun of Shea’s teeth, which was also a sensitive issue for Shea. Ru was also having none of her excuses, saying that the library is like a Friar’s Club Roast, where the queens can feel free to make fun of anything because there is love in the room. Then, just to make sure Alexis was okay, Ru pulled out some reading glasses. And Trinity went in for the kill saying that Alexis looked like a honey-baked ham.
Then Ru asked Charlie Hydes about her lame-ass lip-sync, and Charlie started spitting excuses all over everyone. Among the many excuses she couldn’t keep straight, she claimed to have sustained an injury on her ribs during the cheer-leading challenge. I know a lot of people find Alexis annoying, and I can certainly understand why, but Charlie just gets under my skin. I can’t stand that bitch. Trinity, though, once again, proved that she does not suffer fools, saying that Eureka really hurt herself and would have stayed as long as she could if Ru hadn’t eliminated her. To me, I just get mad at how many of these queens just don’t seem all that prepared for the lip-sync. Charlie especially pissed me off with her whole “drag queens in England don’t lip-sync” line. After nine seasons, you have to know that you’re gong to lip-sync for your life. Period. In fact, I’m really happy that Ru is making it part of the finale.
Nina came across like a paranoid crazy person, who still insists that people are out to get her. When Ru asked if it was possible that none of the girls were trying to sabotage her and it was all in her head, Nina simply said no. I don’t generally like to make serious judgments about people’s mental health, but it seems to me that Nina needs to speak someone. She is troubled.
The biggest drama of the episode, though, came with the revelation that everyone hates Valentina. Aja is by far the most hateful bitch in the bunch, and she comes off as the most petty and jealous, but it’s actually pretty clear that everyone hates Valentina. And, if I am to take what was said in the reunion at face value, they hate her because her fans are mean on social media? Give me a break! Valentina may be cold, but how many times have we heard that this isn’t RuPaul’s Best Friend Race? When Farrah started giving her shit about not returning her texts, I just rolled my eyes. Listen, nobody is saying that Valentina is warm and fuzzy, but to me, all those queens just sounded bitter and envious. Even when Alexis came to Valentina’s defense, Shea accused Alexis of trying to win over Valentina’s fans. Shea and Trinity clearly put on their bitch-pants before the taping of this reunion, which made for some excellent TV. And man, did the shit hit the fan when Valentina won Miss Congeniality! As Ru said, though, those $5000 are still in American currency, and Valentina’s to take home.
One of the other things that stood out about this episode is the way social media brings us all back to high school drama. Sherman Alexie called Facebook an “endless high school reunion.” Well, just watch this reunion special, and you’ll see that it’s true. One girl tells another one that she said something nasty on Instagram, then another one denies it. Then someone suggests looking at at the time stamp on the comment? Then one person says she was just kidding, before someone else yells “But you didn’t write JK!” They all sound insane. If it’s true that Valentina didn’t stop her fans from being mean on social media, I sincerely don’t blame her. Who has that kind of time? Besides, isn’t rule number one, “Don’t feed the trolls”?
Anyway, I look forward to seeing who wins next week. Shea and Trinity were on fire, but I don’t think that means that Peppermint and Sasha have checked out. This season, it really is hard to tell who is in the lead.
